Rubén Salazar: The Life & Legacy of the Journalism Maestro

Event Description

Ruben Salazar was a journalist for the L.A. Times who was killed on the job after being hit in the head by a tear-gas canister during an anti-war protest. His death was ruled a homicide but the police officer responsible was never prosecuted. A native of Ciudad Juarez, Salazar was the most prominent Chicano journalist working for an English-language newspaper during his time. He also served in the U.S. Army, was a war correspondent in Vietnam, a bureau chief in Mexico City, and news director at KMEX-TV.

This event at Plaza de la Raza celebrates his life and times. There will be an exhibit by the Chicano Movimiento Resource Center, curated by Rosalío Muñoz and Cindy Aragón, a panel featuring Rudy Acuña, Virginia Espino, Evelina Fernández, Felix Gutierrez, and others plus film screenings, music by Mark Guerrero (son of the legendary Lalo Guerrero), actos and dramatic readings by students of Monterey Continuation School of East LA, and by guest Richard Yniguez, and an altar by Ophelia Esparza, Margarita Cuarón and Rose Portillo.
