Approaching its 11th season, this year’s Dia de los Muertos festivities include traditional Aztec blessings, Calavera costumes, Day of the Dead altars with a $3000 prize for the best one (you read that correctly) and Cafe Tacvba’s own Ruben Albarran performing with his new project Hoppo, and special guest Carla Morrison are a few of the events planned at Hollywood Forever Cemetary’s Dia de los Muertos extravaganza on October 30th. From the official press release:
• The traditional procession will take place at 2:00 p.m., as Calpulli Huehuetiliztli will guide the spirits to
the transition into the afterlife. Aztec rituals, such as the Fire Dance and spiritual cleansing, will follow.
• Amuse the little ones at the Children’s Space with storytelling time’s “Myths and History from
Zimbabwe to Mexico.” Plus art workshops and face painting.
• For the first time ever, the musical encounter “El Fandango” will present a collective of Soneros,
Zapateado Jarocho, Huapangeros, Trovadores and dancers from Veracruz, Mexico.
• The main stage will feature special performances by the rock-folk group “Hoppo” presented by Café
Tacvba’s lead singer, Ruben Albarran. Also, singer songwriter Carla Morrison will offer a set of Mexican
classics with a special tribute to late Lhasa de Sela.
• The scenery will muse over sketchy heroes like Francisco Villa, Zapata, and Hidalgo, Jose Maria Morelos
y Pavon.
• The ghosts of the Mexican Revolution and Independence will parade around the cemetery.
• Representing African traditions the marimba ensemble Masanga will be performing music for burial
ceremonies from Zimbabwe.
Is there really anything else that can compete with this? We think not!
