Calle 13, Cumbia Electronica and the Best of 2008

It was an interesting year for that dubious genre known as “Latin Alternative”: Latin rockers based in the US came out with refreshing, bilingual tunes (Volumen Cero, Kinky), the insatiable kept pumping out infectious beats (Calle 13, Aterciopelados), and we got hooked on cumbia songs that were not even released in 08 (Damas Gratis).  But what caught our attention more than anything was the mashups between cumbia and hip hop, electronica and even humor (Fauna, El Hijo de La Cumbia, Amandititita). It was a whirlwind 2008 in Latin music that touched on un poquito de todo, and we took it all in…

The following Latin songs are some of our favorites (in no particular order!)

1.    “Llama” – Monareta – Picotero

2.    “Como Eran Las Cosas” – Babasónicos – Mucho

3.    “Normal” – Ximena Sariñana – Mediocre

4.    “El Mar” – Volumen Cero – I Can See The Brite Spot

5.    “They Make Me Mad” – The Mayfire – The List

10.  “Se Te Ve La Tanga” – Damas Gratis – Para Los Pibes

11.  “Viernes de Quincena” – Amandititita – Amandititita

12.  “Piratas del Zanjón” – Fauna – La Manita de Fauna

13.  “Antillas” – El Guincho – Alegranza

14.  “Se Fue A La Villa” – El Remolón feat Ale Sergi
